In its efforts to protect the environment Roche is committed to maintain high ethical and social standards. In striving for a sustainable development we proactively seek to employ new, more sustainable technologies and processes to minimise our impacts on the environment.
We closely follow international developments in the different areas of environmental protection and take the necessary measures in time to comply with upcoming legislation. We closely cooperate with authorities and governments through our membership in federations or industry working groups
For the management of environmental issues within the Roche Group we rely on a worldwide network of SHE Officers and their SHE teams in the individual country operations. They act as advisors to the local management and supervise the implementation of local regulations as well as Corporate standards. Periodic training of these employees (e.g. in global SHE conferences) guarantees the application of the same standards worldwide. In the Roche intranet we have established a platform for providing and exchanging information from the different areas of environmental protection.
To determine the environmental performance of the Roche Group key performance indicators are asked for from individual operations in an annual reporting. Analysis of the data allows finding out strengths and weaknesses and areas calling for measures to be taken. Specific findings may lead to the development of a Corporate standard (e.g. energy consumption) to improve a situation. The data reported serve in addition to define SHE goals to continuously improve our performance.
The results of performance measurement are communicated to all stakeholders in our Annual Report. Rating agencies are picking up this information together with additional data asked for in questionnaires to prepare their own assessments of our environmental performance and make comparisons with our competitors.
