Investing in a sustainable future
Only financially successful companies can be active in addressing environmental and social concerns. And at Roche we have long recognised that only environmentally and socially responsible companies can achieve sustainable financial success.
Following a simple formula
Since 1896 we have followed a simple formula: when we go about our business responsibly, we succeed. Our daily work is to discover and develop novel medicines and solutions that improve patient health and quality of life. As we see it, that is our most significant contribution to society.
Our products and services not only save lives and ease suffering, they also create economic value. The right medication, received in time and at the right dose, hastens recovery and alleviates the most serious – and costly – effects of a disease. This can shorten or even avoid hospital stays. Patients can return to work sooner and reduce earnings lost through illness.
Integrating sustainability into our business
As we see it, our primary responsibility is to remain an active, forward-looking company developing differentiated solutions for the complex business of healthcare delivery. This will enable Roche to create superior value for employees, for patients and the medical profession and for investors and the communities where Roche does business. For us, the business case for sustainability requires a long-term perspective, not only by Roche, but also by its shareholders and other stakeholders.
We are proud to say that for the ninth consecutive year, Roche has been named as Group Leader in sustainability within the Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology & Life Sciences Industry of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This global ranking is published annually by the S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM and measures the sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies.
The 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted 17 new “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. This agreement marks an important milestone in the next phase of sustainable development with the engagement of a wide range of stake-holders.
